Projects 2006-2007:

Beaver Lodge:

Peace keepers in Sierra Leone (led by Tom Yurkiw) volunteered their time and talents to refurbish one of the orphanage buildings on behalf of NOW. The children of St. Mary's Orphanage and NOW, extend sincere thanks and gratitude for the kindness of the peace keepers and their commitment to improving the lives of children in the countries where they serve. Auction for St. Mary's:

Thanks to the generous support of the Ottawa business community, the exceptional auctioneering skills of local entrepreneur Dave Smith, and all who attended NOW’s October 2006 auction, $40,000 was raised for St. Mary’s Children’s Home. St. Mary’s is an orphanage in the West African city of Bo, Sierra Leone.

In addition to providing financial support to St. Mary’s, NOW Directors Des Garvey and Fred Wolker travelled to Bo in November 2006 to join with the community to finish some of the construction projects underway at the orphanage.

NOW was present at the official opening ceremony December 9, 2006.

As a result of your support of NOW, St. Mary’s was able to:

  • Construct separate sleeping quarters for the young girls COMPLETED, December 2006
  • Build new latrines COMPLETED, December 2006
  • Purchase livestock – a new litter of pigs provides learning opportunities as well as a much needed food source COMPLETED, December 2006

Not only are the boys and girls enjoying new, separate sleeping quarters, but more importantly, the additional construction provides St. Mary’s with larger facilities to care for the increasing number of children who come to them for help.
